Description
A long drive through Kofa National Wildlife Refuge. We saw bighorn sheep during our trip, but were not quick enough to get a picture. Other wildlife includes mule deer, coyote, bobcat, fox and golden eagle. After you cross McPherson Pass, stop at the Castle Dome Mines Museum to learn about the area’s extensive mining history. The rough half-mile hike to the cabins at Big Eye Mine is worth the effort. Take drinking water.
Mostly single-lane washboard road with a few bumpier spots. McPherson Pass is rougher and requires good articulation and high ground clearance. Suitable for aggressive stock SUVs with 4-wheel drive.
