Description
The Imogene and Camp Bird Roads in the Yankee Boy Basin area outside Ouray are part of a venerable maze of old mining roadways that are a great choice for mountain biking. The roads are typically traveled by off road vehicles as well.
Imogene and Camp Bird Roads are only two of several roadways in the area that are popular with bikers. The roadways climb to high elevations through alpine forest and above tree line. The Yankee Boy Basin is an old mining area and relics from mining past including old mine entrances and abandoned structures can be found along the way.
If taken all the way, the Imogene Road connects Telluride and Ouray in just under 18 miles. The pass goes up over 13,000 feet through the heart of the San Juan Mountains. A shuttle rig in Telluride is a welcome sight once there or turn around and start peddling back up.

The Imogene and Camp Bird Roads are multi-use so riders may encounter hikers, trail runners, vehicles, horseback riders and other users and should follow right of way protocol when meeting other groups. The Imogene and Camp Bird Roads are high elevation and can experience sudden weather shifts, so riders should bring appropriate warm layers in anticipation of this. In addition, riders should be prepared with a stocked repair kit, first aid kit and extra food and water. In addition, if riding to Telluride consider a shuttle or start very early!
