Description
The granite blocks of the famed London Bridge, once spanning the River Thames in London, England, now glisten over the Bridgewater Channel. Designed in 1799, the bridge was completed in 1831, but by 1924 was unable to withstand 20th century traffic and was slowly sinking. In need of replacement, the city of London sold the London Bridge in an auction in 1967 to the highest bidder, Robert P. McCulloch for $2.4M. The bridge was then meticulously dismantled, and he then had it shipped to the United States and reassembled in Lake Havasu City. Once completed, the Bridgewater Channel was dug beneath the bridge to create what is not our Island District. The bridge is explored by thousands of visitos each year, and both self-guided and guided walking tours featuring the intriguing history of the bridge are popular activities.
