Safford (pop 14,000) is a medium-sized town in southeastern Arizona. It is primarily a farming and mining town, but serves as a nice base for exploring Mt. Graham in the Pinaleno Mountain range southwest of town.
Mt. Graham is the third highest mountain in Arizona with a peak reaching 10,720 feet and is also home to the Mt. Graham International Observatory. The Pinaleno mountain range is one of four of the Coronado National Forest's "sky islands", and has plenty of camping, hiking and a little trout fishing. It provides a refreshing break from the often scorching summer temperatures of the surrounding areas.
Safford is located in southeastern Arizona where US Hwy 70 and 191 meet. It is 30 miles north of I-10.
Access to Mt Graham is off AZ Hwy 366, 7 miles south of Safford.
