Description
Surrounded by the Manti-La Sal National Forest, the Energy Loop provides ample opportunity for hunting, fishing, hiking and camping. In summer, water sports are enjoyed at Scofield Reservoir State Park and Huntington’s Electric Lake. Huntington Canyon supplies some of the greatest trophy fly fishing in the state and Electric Lake, Huntington and Cleveland Reservoirs are an angler’s dream. There are also improved hiking trails at various sites on the byway. During the winter, ice fishing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are popular on Skyline Drive as well as the trails groomed by the state park in Scofield.
The SR31 Huntington stretch of the Byway includes the Stuart Guard Station, which is a restored historic landmark which is now a visitor center and mini-museum. The SR 96 Eccles section connects with the historic mining town of Scofield and travels by their Scofield Cemetery which reflects the historical era mining disasters.
The Energy Loop: Huntington & Eccles Canyons National Scenic Byways cover 85.92 miles (138.27 km). You can drive the loop in 1.5 hours, but it is advisable to allow between 2 and 4 hours to relax and enjoy the gorgeous scenery and stop at view areas along the way. The road winds between fantastic mountain vistas and rambling streams and travels through the beautiful Manti-LaSal National Forest, rising up to 10,000 feet above sea level. On a clear day you can see landmarks 50 miles away. The Energy Loop has a rich history of industrial development. While traveling through the beautiful canyons,The traveler will be able to view coal mining operations, coal-fired power plants, gas exploration, historic mining towns and features.
