The White Mountains along the Arizona - New Mexico border are the second highest range in the state. The range is dotted with mountain lakes and streams. Camping and fishing is plentiful in this high mountain area with several stocked lakes, and most years there is sufficient snow for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing at Sunrise Ski Area.
The towns of Pinetop-Lakeside and Springerville-Eagar along the northern edge of the range provide the most popular access points. They have plenty of hotels and restaurants.
The White Mountains are 220 miles east of Phoenix and 250 miles north of Tucson. Their relative isolation along the eastern border of Arizona means you'll be able to enjoy some solitude.
